CFIA Announces Organic Product Import Changes

Organic product import regulations are changing in Canada.Introduction

Organic product import regulations in Canada are changing, and staying informed is crucial for your business. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is moving into Phase 2 of its project to strengthen import controls for organic foods. These updates will affect how you bring organic products into Canada. This article explains what you need to know for a smooth transition and continued compliance.

These changes aim to improve traceability and verification of organic products. Understanding and following these new procedures is essential for all businesses importing organic goods into Canada. Keep reading to learn how these updates will affect you and what steps to take to prepare.

What’s Changing with Canada Organic Product Import?

Phase 1 of the CFIA’s project, completed in November 2024, introduced new codes in AIRS and required importers to declare possession of organic certificates. Now, Phase 2 is starting. From May 26, 2025, you’ll need to provide a digital copy (image) of the organic certificate with your Integrated Import Declaration (IID), also known as the CBSA Single Window.

The CBSA will then assign a Unique Reference Number (URN) for each uploaded certificate. This URN simplifies things, as you can use it for future shipments of the same product, avoiding repeated uploads. You can also include multiple URNs in a single declaration if necessary.

Why Are These Canada Organic Product Import Changes Happening?

These updates reflect a stronger focus on the integrity of the organic product supply chain in Canada. The CFIA wants to protect consumers and maintain trust in the organic label. These stricter import controls help the agency track and verify organic product authenticity, preventing fraud.

How Will These Changes Affect You?

These changes directly affect importers and brokers involved in bringing organic products into Canada. You must be prepared to provide digital copies of organic certificates for all applicable products. Also, understanding how to get and use URNs is essential for efficient import declarations.

What You Need to Do to Prepare

First, familiarize yourself with the newly added organic products in AIRS. This helps you know which products need the new documentation. Second, have a system to create and manage digital copies of your organic certificates. Finally, learn how to use the CBSA Single Window and the URN system.

It’s important to know that after May 26, 2025, failing to upload the certificate or provide the URN will lead to a rejected import declaration. So, being prepared is key to avoiding delays and ensuring your organic product imports go smoothly.
